One way to familiarize your self with G-Code is through the open source software packages used for RepRap: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repetier.com\/documentation\" target=\"_blank\">Repetier Host<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reprap.org\/wiki\/Printrun\" target=\"_blank\">Printrun (pronterface)<\/a>. I&#8217;m currently using Repetier Host, which seems to have more extensive documentation at this point.<\/p>\n<p>Both Repetier and Printrun interface with the converters <a href=\"http:\/\/fabmetheus.crsndoo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Skeinforge<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/slic3r.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Slic3r<\/a>, which convert STL model files into G-Code. Right now I&#8217;m using Slic3r, which also seems to have more documentation at this point.<\/p>\n<p>You can use all of these programs without a connection to a fabrication machine. All you need is an STL file. Once you have that, you can download Repetier Host and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.repetier.com\/documentation\/repetier-host-mac\/object-placement\/\" target=\"_blank\">start with these directions<\/a> to load your STL into the software.
